Understanding the root causes of issues associated with poorly performing “worst” feeders often requires hours of research, patrolling and diagnosing based primarily on trial and error. This can be frustrating for crews, engineers and, of course, the customers involved. In addition, these feeders are often significantly negative contributors to the utility’s reliability metrics.

The Sentient Energy MM3™, with its distributed applications for fault detection, load logging, and waveform data capture, give the utility an effective tool to understand and ultimately locate and resolve hard-to-diagnose issues related to poorly performing feeders. Used in a “trouble shooting” mode, the MM3 can help identify the location and causes of transient and temporary faults such as those caused by vegetation issues.

Transient events often inject “noise” — including a unique waveform signature — that can be captured and analyzed by the MM3 running the Waveform application. This metadata and detailed oscillography will be communicated to the utility wirelessly, and if desired, in near-real time, giving the utility unprecedented access to high-resolution data and the ability to quickly and effectively address irritating customer issues.
